The Blind Receive Their Sight
Sermon Summary for Quinquagesima Sunday
Printed 2-13-2015, Norfolk Daily News

Jesus had compassion on a blind man and restored his sight. But Jesus also healed him in a far more important way. He forgave his sins, promised him eternal life, and even gave him the faith to believe it. He gave him spiritual sight.

Much worse than physical blindness is spiritual blindness. Many have perfect vision, and are still inwardly blind. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Yet, many do not believe. Many doubt they will get to heaven, and others trust in their own goodness to get there. But that is a foundation of sand that cannot withstand the righteous judgment of God. He requires absolute perfection. As true God and true Man in one Person, Jesus provided us the sure foundation of His perfect life and sacrifice for us on the cross. Because of Him, there is hope even for the most blind.

It is stubborn blindness to love sin and get more comfortable with it, not seeing or caring about the consequences of broken relationships and families. Yet, Jesus comes not to condemn, but to bind the brokenhearted, to heal and to comfort all who mourn. He continues to graciously send affliction to turn our hearts from sin to repentance, and from darkness to the light and hope of the forgiveness of our sins, “That ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
