The Seed is the Word of God
Sermon Summary for Sexagesima Sunday
Printed 2-21-2014, Norfolk Daily News

Jesus tells a story. A farmer plants seed, yet, he is so generous that he throws it everywhere. He almost seems reckless, throwing it not only on good ground, but also on a road, on a rock, and among thorns. His “recklessness” represents the compassion of our Heavenly Father who wants not one single soul to perish. So he spreads the saving gospel among all nations and races, saying “preach the gospel to every creature.” No matter how great our sins may be, the Father still sent his son to die for all people, even for those who crucified him. Now Christ is risen from the dead, and he raises us to new life by his word and spirit.

But unfortunately, like seed thrown on a road, many reject God’s word in their hearts before even giving it a chance. Others believe for a time, but then allow the cares and riches of this life to overcome them, like seed that begins to grow, but then is choked by thorns. Yet, Christ wore the crown of thorns for us all. God “hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin.” That means that there is still hope and forgiveness for even the greatest of sinners in Christ. God scatters his word generously, among all nations, because it is his desire for all to be saved. Therefore, “receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your souls.” For it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.”
