The Stronger One
Sermon Summary for 3rd Sunday in Lent
Printed 3-21-2014, Norfolk Daily News

The pen is mightier than the sword. Words are more effective than violence. Yet, even words can be used to hurt people. This is the devil’s greatest weapon. He lies. He plants the seed of doubt. “Did God really say that?” With deceitful words, the devil pretends to be our greatest ally. He makes sin seem so great, promising that “your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods.” But then he wants us to be condemned for our sin for all eternity.

Yet, there is hope for us in the words of Christ. He says “the truth shall make you free.” The truth is that we cannot overcome the devil and his lies by our own strength. Otherwise, why did Christ need to be born, and be tempted of the devil in our place? Scripture is clear: “let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” But we can put our trust in the one who is stronger than the devil and his lies.

Christ invaded the devil’s kingdom. He took upon himself all the sin and guilt that the devil wishes to use against us. He took upon himself the complete penalty that our sins deserved. Christ was born without sin, yet, “He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” He took upon himself all the accusations that we deserved. Those who put their trust in him will not be condemned. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
