Our King Comes Meek and Lowly
Sermon Summary for Palm Sunday

The King of all kings and Lord of all lords comes in a way that many would not expect. The almighty Son of God rides into Jerusalem not on a great war horse, but on a donkey. Yet, the donkey shows us the way in which Jesus comes. He doesn’t come with vengeance. He doesn’t come to put us down. He doesn’t come to condemn. “For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.” Jesus comes meek and lowly for the salvation of sinners. He came concealing his almighty power so that he could go to the cross for us all. Now he gently invites all sinners, saying, “Come unto Me…for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

This isn’t the kind of King everyone wanted, yet he is the kind of king everyone needed. All have sinned and come short of God’s glory. Because of our many sins against God, we do not deserve heaven. Yet, Christ is a merciful, patient, compassionate, kind, and forgiving Savior. Even for me, the chief of sinners, Christ came, so that I might find freedom from my sins in his promises. “If the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

On Palm Sunday the people accepted their King with shouts of joy and Hosannas. Five days later they shouted, “Crucify Him….we have no king but Ceasar.” Yet, this was all part of God’s gracious plan to give “His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
