Christ’s Love Saves us and Enables us to Love
Sermon Summary for 18th Sunday after Trinity

“What think ye of Christ? Whose Son is He?” There is no greater question. The answer determines the fate of every eternal soul. Jesus is the only-begotten Son of God, the only Savior of mankind. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Believing in Jesus means everything. What would we profit if we gained the whole world and then lost our eternal soul by neglecting faith in Christ? Peter had it right when he said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.” John agreed, saying, “This is the true God, and eternal life.” Jesus went to the cross to make perfect peace between God and man. He raised Himself from the grave, proving our sins are forgiven and promising we too will rise. It is His great love that keeps calling us by the gospel, “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

This is the kind of love our world needs the most. Mankind’s love so often falls short in thought, word, and deed, but Christ’s love never fails. His promises of comfort and forgiveness cannot be broken. He alone loves us with a perfect love. Yet, He also says, “Behold, I make all things new.” Through His Word and Spirit, He creates new desires, new love, and new strength within us. It is His love and forgiveness that overcomes, makes everything right between us and God, and enables us to grow in love toward God and man. “I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me.”
