Blessings in God’s Word
Sermon Summary for the 3rd Sunday in Lent

“Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” Our greatest treasure is God’s Word. It even far excels the lasting value of earthly bread. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” The Word of God is that one thing needful. With it we have everything we could possibly need. With it, God promises to keep us and sustain us until our very last day. With it we have the truth about salvation, and how it is received freely by grace, through faith. “If ye continue in My Word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” By the power of God’s Word, the devil’s lies are overcome.

Yet, without God’s Word, nothing is really worth anything. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Yet, God promises to bless those who follow His Word. “Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” The Word is the avenue by which God’s Spirit works. It is the power of God. It is the avenue by which God chooses to enter, and remain in our heart. “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” Even the mother of our Lord, Mary, would not have been blessed, had she not also, heard, and kept the Word of God. A certain woman told Jesus, “Blessed is the womb that bare Thee…But He said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the Word of God, and keep it.”
